01 / 04Success conceals compensation

During successful operation, informal expertise, excess capacity and external rescue can conceal structural weakness. The output appears coherent because someone or something continually absorbs the discrepancy.

Failure removes compensation. Dependencies become visible. Boundaries prove porous. Nominal reserves reveal whether they were ever available.

02 / 04Event and architecture

The visible incident is not the architecture of failure. A component may break locally while propagation is determined by coupling, centrality, delay and the absence of containment.

03 / 04Learning is not automatic

Failure reveals structure only if the system remains capable of looking. Evidence may disappear, blame may replace inquiry and recovery may restore appearance before understanding can form.

A mature architecture preserves traces, separates error from identity and allows local failure to remain smaller than the future it helps protect.

04 / 04Reserve and graceful degradation

Reserve allows a system to encounter disturbance without surrendering every essential function. Modularity and containment prevent failure from requiring the whole to fail at once.

The aim is not invulnerability. It is intelligible degradation, recoverable consequence and memory that changes what follows.
