Within which boundary, scale and duration is coherence being claimed?

01 / 04Every system is drawn

A boundary is not merely discovered. It is also chosen. The observer decides which actors, resources, timescales and consequences belong to the account.

This decision may be necessary, but it must remain visible. Otherwise the border of the model is mistaken for the border of reality.

02 / 04Coherence changes with scale

A process can be stable locally and destructive globally. A practice can succeed over one quarter while consuming the conditions of future success. An institution can appear efficient because the labour that preserves it has been assigned outside the measured boundary.

03 / 04Displaced consequence

Local order may be purchased through cost exported to another department, community, ecosystem or generation. The excluded system becomes the reserve from which the visible one borrows coherence.

The boundary should therefore widen until excluded consequence no longer changes the essential judgment.

04 / 04The ethics of inclusion

Boundary is also power. It determines whose experience becomes evidence, whose cost remains external and who may contest the description of the whole.

The Architect does not seek an infinitely large model. He seeks a boundary adequate to the consequence being claimed.
